  • Born approximately 569 BCE in Samos Greece.

  • Died around 500 - 475 BCE in Metapontum Italy.

  • He loved to learn and travel.

  • He studied in Egypt with the priests in 535 BCE.

  • He was taken prisoner 10 years later when Persia invaded Egypt.

  • He got out and went back to Greece in 520 BCE.

  • This is where he founded a school called The Semicircle.

  • This school was devoted to studying philosophy and religion.

  • His followers, called the Pythagoreans, lived and worked at the school.

Pythagorean Beliefs
  • All things are numbers.

  • The soul resides in the brain and can be purified with mathematics and music.

  • Numbers have personalities.

  • The world depends on the interaction of opposites.

  • Certain symbols have a mystical significance.

  • All members of the society are strictly loyal and keep everything a secret.

Pythagorean Discoveries
  • Sum of the angles of a triangle is two right angles (or 180°).

  • Pythagorean Theorem.

  • Constructing geometric figures to solve equations.

  • Irrational numbers.

  • Five regular solids.

  • Earth was a sphere in the center of the universe.
